What Is EAP and How Can It Help You?

Learn how Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) offer free, confidential counseling—and what steps to take if you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start.

Ever feel like therapy is out of reach?

You’re not alone. So many people carry the weight of stress, burnout, or emotional pain—but hesitate to reach out because they’re worried about cost, time, or just not knowing where to start.

But what if the support you need is already available… and already paid for?

Let’s talk

What’s an EAP?

EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program. It’s a benefit that many employers quietly include in their health or HR packages. You might not hear much about it, but it’s real—and often underused.

Here’s what EAPs usually offer:

  • A set number of free, confidential therapy sessions

  • Support for stress, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, and more

  • No copays, no deductibles, no need to involve your supervisor

Yes, free. And confidential.

Why Don’t More People Know About This?

Because it’s rarely talked about. Many employees don’t even realize they have access to an EAP, or they assume using it is complicated or not private.

But the truth? You don’t need permission from your boss, and no one at work is notified when you use it. It’s designed to support your mental and emotional well-being—not to create more stress.

How to Check If You Have EAP Benefits

  1. Contact HR – A quick email or call can help you find out if EAP is part of your benefits.

  2. Look through your benefits portal – You may already have a brochure or webpage with contact info.

  3. Ask if your spouse’s plan includes EAP – You might be eligible through their coverage, too.

  4. On a parent’s insurance? – If you're still covered under a parent’s plan, ask them to check if EAP is included. You could have access to free support and not even know it.

If We’re Not on the EAP Panel, Don’t Let That Stop You

Here’s what we want you to know: Whether you work with us or someone else, getting the care you need still matters deeply to us.

We believe healing begins with clarity. And sometimes, clarity starts by simply learning what resources are already within reach.

If your EAP provider isn’t a fit or you want something longer-term after those initial sessions, we're here to support you in other ways—with culturally competent care, resources, or guidance toward your next steps.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

So many people, especially women who carry a lot for others, go without the support they truly need. EAP is one small way to receive care without jumping through hoops.

Take the first step. Ask the question. You might already be covered.
